Player-of-the-Week
Week Ending October 9 1996
This week's CIAU Female Athlete
of the Week is Carla Somerville, a 5 year veteran midfielder from
the University of Alberta Women's Field Hockey Team. Carla, a
native of Calgary, Alberta, is a 4th year Physical Education student.
Somerville scored seven of the Pandas' 18 goals in Canada West's
tournament No. 2 at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
Carla, a 2nd team CIAU All-Canadian in 1994-95, now has one-third
of Alberta's goals (12 of 36) after two tournaments, a key statistic in
the Pandas' undefeated (7-0-1) run. Panda players now lead in
Canada West scoring with Somerville - 12 goals, Sue Armstrong - 8
goals, and Chris Hunter with 6 goals. Alberta's control over 1st
spot in the CWUAA is a huge improvement over last years final
placement of 4th in the conference with a 3-6-3 record. Alberta
hopes to continue their hold on top spot as the final CWUAA
tournament will take place October 19th to 20th at the University
of Victoria, the host of the 1996 CIAU Women's Field Hockey
Championship.
Other nominees for Female Athlete of the Week:
Leisa MacIntosh, St. Francis Xavier, Soccer
Mélanie Choinière, McGill, Cross Country
Sara Dillabough, Waterloo, Cross Country.
